GREAT Scholarships for a Sustainable Future: 26 Scholarships for COP26

  • The British Council is delighted to announce the launch of the GREAT Scholarships for a Sustainable Future: 26 scholarships for COP26.

The GREAT Scholarships for a Sustainable Future scheme offers over £280,000 worth of scholarships to qualifying students from Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and Vietnam to undertake postgraduate taught studies in the UK from autumn 2021 in climate change related courses.

Students with a valid Tier4 Student Visa have the opportunity to stay and work, or to search for work in the UK at any skill level for a period of two years via the Graduate Route that begins in the summer of 2021, which means that any student who graduates in the summer of 2021 or later will be able to apply.

Seven UK universities have partnered with the British Council and the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign to offer Egyptians scholarships opportunities under the scheme. These universities are Cranfield University, Royal Agricultural University, University College London, University of Essex, University of Glasgow, University of Greenwich – Natural Resources Institute, and University of Manchester.

Universities offer grants in many environmental topics such as green buildings, waste management, and water, and the call for applications closes end of March in some universities and end of May in others.

Each scholarship is worth a minimum of £10,000 towards tuition fees for a one-year postgraduate course in the UK for the 2021/2022 academic year. Students intending to apply for the scholarships must have received an offer of entry from one of the participating universities and must satisfy all entry requirements for the chosen course as stated by the respective university.

It is worth mentioning that UK higher education providers are globally recognized, with 4 universities in the top ten, and 18 in the top 100.

This scholarship scheme is part of a global cultural relations programme that the British Council is leading to add value to COP26 (the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties). The UK will host COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021. This will be the largest international climate change summit the UK has hosted, bringing together over 30,000 delegates including heads of states, climate experts and campaigners to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change.
